First impressions are worth their weight in gold. As of May 2009, there were estimated to be over 109 million web sites in operation. Of those, almost 74% were commercial site. Initially, web sites were designed to compliment existing "store front" businesses. However, a large percentage of the sites on the web today ARE the business's store front! So where once a company invested large amounts of money into the design of signage for their walk-in business... today they are investing in web signage... in the form of their site design and the integral components that make of their site. Web banners are usually either the first or second visual you recognize when you visit a new site.

A web banner should, first, give the consumer a visual concept of what your business stands for... answer "what are you promoting"? Second, the banner should be consistent. This banner is your "on-line" business card. The design of your banner should be as serious a consideration as that which you place on your business card and the balance of your web site... after all, you only get one chance for that first impression!
